Getting Started
What is NestPrint Nesting Software?
NestPrint is a native Mac application for fine art photographers and print studios running large format roll printers (Canon imagePROGRAF, Epson SureColor, HP DesignJet). It allows multiple different-sized images to be nested together on a single roll or sheet, with a configurable perimeter cut line for hand-trimming.
Not a RIP. Not a subscription. Not a plugin. A focused layout tool that sits between Photoshop/Lightroom and the OEM printer driver.
What are the System Requirements
– macOS 13 (Ventura) or later
– Apple Silicon or Intel Mac
– A printer with an installed macOS driver (Canon imagePROGRAF, Epson SureColor, HP DesignJet, or any other printer with a standard macOS driver)
How do I install NestPrint
1. Download the DMG from your purchase confirmation email or [nestprint.app/download]
2. Open the DMG and drag NestPrint into your Applications folder
3. On first launch, macOS may show a warning that NestPrint is from an unidentified developer. This is normal for apps downloaded outside the Mac App Store, even when notarized. Right-click (or Control-click) the app icon, choose **Open**, then **Open** again in the dialog. You only need to do this once.
Starting a Trial
NestPrint includes a 14-day free trial with full functionality. No credit card required. If you decide to purchase, enter your license key at any time to convert to a full license — nothing is lost from your trial period.
Activating Your License
1. Launch NestPrint
2. When prompted, enter the license key from your purchase email
3. Your license is tied to this Mac and doesn’t require an internet connection to verify — it works offline permanently once activated
Printing
Which printers does NestPrint support?
NestPrint works with any printer that has an installed macOS driver — it doesn’t require a proprietary driver of its own. It’s been tested extensively on the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO series. Epson SureColor and HP DesignJet printers use the same standard macOS printing path and should work, though driver-specific quirks vary by manufacturer and haven’t all been individually verified. If you run into printer-specific behavior, let us know — see Contact below.
Color Management: which mode should I use?
NestPrint offers two color management modes:
**Printer Manages Color** (default) — the printer driver handles all color conversion using its own built-in profiles. This is the simplest option and matches how most people already print, including with the printer manufacturer’s own software.
**Application Manages Color** — you select a specific ICC profile (for your paper stock, for example) and NestPrint performs the color conversion itself before sending data to the printer. Use this if you have a custom profile for your paper that you want full control over. You can also choose your rendering intent (Perceptual or Relative Colorimetric) and toggle Black Point Compensation, which preserves shadow detail when converting between color spaces with different black points — commonly needed on matte and cotton rag papers.
If you’re not sure which to use: start with Printer Manages Color. Switch to Application Manages Color only if you have a specific custom ICC profile you want to use.
What file formats can I import?
TIFF, JPEG, PNG, and DNG. Single-page PDF import is also supported.
Layouts & Files
What is a .nestprint file?
When you save a job in NestPrint, it creates a `.nestprint` file containing your entire layout — image placement, sizes, cut mark settings, color management settings, and more. Your original image files are referenced by their file path, not copied into the document, which keeps file sizes small. Reopening a `.nestprint` file restores your exact layout for reprinting.
NestPrint says a file is missing when I reopen a saved layout
This happens if an image referenced in your saved layout has been moved, renamed, or deleted since you last saved. NestPrint will show you which file(s) are missing and let you relink them to their new location.
Can I export my layout as a PDF or image file instead of printing directly?
Yes. NestPrint can export your nested layout as PDF, TIFF, or JPEG, with cut marks included and your selected color space embedded. This is useful for sending files to an external print service or archiving a job.
Can I sharpen an image before printing?
Yes. NestPrint includes a sharpening tool with a live before/after preview, available per image. Sharpening is available regardless of your image’s resolution — it’s a general creative preference, not limited to specific situations. Sharpening defaults to off; adjust the slider to taste, and use the live preview to see the effect before printing.
Licensing & Billing
Is NestPrint a subscription?
No. NestPrint is a one-time purchase. There’s no recurring fee, and your license doesn’t expire.
What does my license cover?
One license covers 3 Macs.
Will I have to pay for updates?
Bug fixes and improvements within your current major version are free, delivered automatically through NestPrint’s built-in update checker. Major new versions with significant new features (such as a future v1.5 or v2) may be offered as a paid upgrade at a discounted price for existing customers and your existing version continues to work either way.
What is the refund policy?
Who created NestPrint?
NestPrint was created by Mark Frohman and MFStudios for the print studio Daylight Dreams Editions. Mark is a UI Designer and web developer and runs the print studio at DDE.
Is NestPrint a good replacment for the ImageNest app that was discontinued a few years ago?
NestPrint is an excellent replacment for ImageNest. If you were are are an ImageNest user, you were probably dissapointed that it was discontinued a few years ago without a trace. Perhaps you are still running an old version but are unable to update your mac because of it, or it’s started to get buggy. NestPrint is the perfect replacement for your legacy ImageNest workflow, built for modern macs and with additional features. NestPrint has everything ImageNest had and more.
Is NestPrint a good choice for someone just starting to print their own art or photography?
Yes, no matter what you’re printing, you need an application to set up your printing preferences. You can use lightroom or photoshop but your options will be limited. NestPrint is an easy to use app that will make printing, arranging, and trimming much easier than the default options.
